5 Books That Changed My Life at 50

Feb 05, 2025

1. Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whittaker -

This book came at a pivotal moment for me. I decided to stop drinking over a course of time purely for health and weight loss purposes. I stumbled upon this book and decided to read it about two months into not drinking. It opened my eyes so much to alcohol and its effects on the female physiology. I attribute it to helping with my cognitive dissonance around alcohol. If you are sober, curious or just or interested in the effects of alcohol on the female body I highly recommend this book.

2.  Come as You Are by Dr. Emily Nagoski -

Wow! I feel like this should be part of every girls sex education! This book is so empowering and validating. It was shocking to me how much I learned about my own physiology from this book. This is a MUST for every woman. I love that it’s written from a female doctor’s perspective. Especially one that is an expert in sex with the female anatomy and physiology. Trust me, READ THIS BOOK.

3. Brooke Sheilds is Not Allowed to Get Old by Brooke Shields -

This is a highly intelligent and smartly written book from a woman that I believe is the queen of the Gen X generation. I love her perspective and how she relates everything in a very down-to-earth approach for midlife women. I read this book feeling more proud and empowered as a 50 year old woman!

4. The Women, by Kristin Hannah

This is the most beautifully written fiction book I’ve ever read. I love how it spans through generations and how it weaves and the importance of connections and female friendships. I literally dreamt of the characters each night and felt like I wanted to keep learning from all the women depicted in this book. It felt like the end of a friendship when the book ended. It made me want to reconnect with old friends and make commitments to my current friends to keep strong connections going. This is the kind of book that will stick with you forever.

5. The New Menopause by Dr. Mary Claire Haver

There is a reason why everyone is talking about this book. And I mean everyone! This book pulls back the veil on what is happening to us during perimenopause and menopause. It teaches you how to become your own advocate and to not feel isolated, crazy, or alone.
